This is a concept of the Microsoft smart watch compared with the official super-popular Microsoft Band that was released late last year. The Microsoft Band wasn't everything we'd hoped for in a smart watch, as it was geared more as a fitness tracker than a wearable, but the second generation that could release with the launch of Windows 10 might be able to compete with the likes of the Apple Watch The Microsoft Band definitely shows promise. It performs basic notifications and "smart watch" functions and has fabulous fitness capabilities, including a UV sensor and built-in GPS, both features that the Apple Watch doesn't have. Not to mention the Microsoft Band is one of the only smart watches that is truly cross-platform, as it works with iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. The Apple Watch will only run with iPhones, and the Android Wear series currently only runs with Android devices, with support for iOS expected this summer.
It also touts high battery life in the "smart watch" classification, but lacks severely in power and memory. More recently an update to the Band was released, unveiling an SDK for developers, allowing apps to be written more easily with the platform, as well as keyboard functionality being added. These two features point to the Band becoming a full-blown smart watch, even though the current Microsoft Band doesn't have the power to fulfill this. This suggests than a second-gen Band will be released sometime soon, presumably with Windows 10. If it is released with Windows 10, then the Band 2 will run some lightweight version of Windows 10. This opens up the possibility that the Band 2 will have access to Universal Apps, instantly expanding its app market to compete with Android Wear and Apple Watch (see our article on Universal Apps here). There might be improvements in the sensors, including a possible addition of radical new hardware. The new Band will probably have an upgraded RAM, storage, and processor in order to run more apps. The Microsoft Band is a wildly popular wearable device, and we can't wait to see how Microsoft will alter and improve their second version! Like, comment, and share this article. Thanks!
